Project: SAP ECC Greenfield + USA locations rollout

Corteco is a brand of the internationally active Freudenberg Group and is one of the leading suppliers of sealing, vibration control and filtration solutions in the automotive aftermarket. With locations in Europe, Asia and North America, Corteco supplies workshops and spare parts dealers worldwide with OEM-quality components.

As part of the global digitalisation strategy, the subsidiary NGP USA was to be connected to a new, central SAP ECC system landscape.

Corteco NGP USA had previously been working with a heterogeneous mix of IT systems that were not fully integrated into the Freudenberg Group’s central processes.

Manual data entry, different master data systems and local applications led to

  • inconsistent reporting structures,
  • increased care requirements
  • and a lack of transparency regarding the supply chain and distribution.

To overcome these challenges, Corteco opted for a greenfield implementation of SAP ECC to integrate its US location into its global ERP strategy.

Project objectives:
  • Development of a standardised SAP ECC system based on a global template
  • Harmonisierung von Vertriebs-, Logistik- und Finanzprozessen
  • Introduction of a future-proof, scalable ERP platform
  • Local adaptation to US business processes and compliance requirements
  • Ensuring a smooth go-live and rollout without operational disruption
  • 🇺🇸 Local requirements and compliance regulations in the United States (e.g. taxes, GAAP, customs processes) had to be integrated into the global SAP template without compromising its level of standardisation.
  • ⏱️ Tight timeframe due to fixed go-live dates and high dependencies on global IT and production processes.
  • 🌍 Coordination across time zones between Europe and the USA – with different working and decision-making structures.
  • 🧩 Data migration and master data harmonisation from various local systems into a central S/4HANA landscape.
  • 💬 Cultural and communication differences within the globally distributed project team, which were addressed through clear roles, agile coordination and methodical change management.
  • ⚙️ Process alignment between logistics, purchasing, sales and finance – without compromising operational efficiency during the transition phase.

The rollout at Corteco NGP USA was marked by several technical and organisational challenges that required a precise project approach and a high degree of flexibility.

Following a successful blueprint and initial system configuration, the project was in the preparatory phase for integration testing when it was paused at management level and later discontinued as a result of geopolitical developments and economic uncertainties in 2008.

This decision was not related to technical or methodological implementation, but resulted from changes in corporate strategic priorities in the wake of the global market and crisis situation.

The implementation – an integrated approach consisting of

SAP ASAP (structure) and ARIS Toolset (process transparency).

Key measures:

  • Greenfield implementation of SAP ECC with global template
  • Process analysis and modelling
  • Localisation of US-specific requirements (e.g. tax and customs processes, GAAP-compliant accounting)
  • Establishment of an integrated process landscape for SD, MM, FI/CO, PP and WM (kitting)
  • Agile rollout approach with short sprints, continuous testing and key user reviews
  • Close cooperation between Freudenberg, Corteco Global IT and the local team in the USA
  • Standardised MM and SD processes as the basis for global rollouts
  • Standardised system landscape and greater data consistency
  • Reduced maintenance costs thanks to template approach
  • Sustainable improvement in process and system transparency
  • Establishment of a global SAP competence structure within the group
  • Contribution to the digitalisation and harmonisation of Freudenberg’s business processes
